Owl & Moon

This fine arts pencil drawing brings together two of the night’s oldest symbols, the owl and the moon, drawing on fables and myths that have followed each across centuries of folklore. Individually, both figures carry a long history as guides through darkness, one through sharp sight and instinct, the other through steady, reflected light.

The owl has long stood as a keeper of hidden knowledge, associated in various traditions with wisdom and protective insight, and in others with the passage between the living world and the spirit world. The moon carries its own layered legacy, tied across cultures to intuition, transformation, and the quiet governing of the night. Where the owl watches, the moon illuminates, and together they form a single, unified presence: a silent witness to what unfolds after the sun has gone.

Rendered in graphite, the piece leans into this shared mythology, pairing the owl’s watchful presence with the moon’s soft glow to suggest something older than either symbol alone. The drawing becomes less an illustration of two creatures and more a meditation on night itself, the wisdom found in stillness, the guidance found in shadow, and the quiet mystery that has drawn people to look skyward for as long as stories have been told.
